What a BDSM vacation really looks like

Forget the resort fantasy. A BDSM vacation, as most couples live it, is one or two nights in a private room built for play: a dungeon suite behind an ordinary front door, a love room with a cross beside the hot tub, a vaulted cellar with rings set into the stone. You arrive, the gear is already there, and nobody asks why you packed rope. Some guests treat it as a kinky getaway between two cities; others build an entire BDSM retreat around a single address and barely leave it.

What you will rarely find is staff, a programme or a crowd. These are not clubs, and not play parties. Privacy is the whole point: soundproofing where the host has invested in it, self check-in at many addresses, and no housekeeping knocking at ten in the morning.

Kink hotel, dungeon suite or kinky rental?

The words blur, so here is how they map to what you will actually book. A kink hotel, in the strict sense, is a hotel with several themed rooms and a front desk, and the atlas holds only a few. Most addresses are single private spaces run by one host: a converted apartment, a cellar, a garden annex, sold as a BDSM room, a dungeon suite or a love room. The last of these began as a romantic suite with a spa, and many now come properly equipped: 249 stays on the map have a St. Andrew's cross, 114 a sling or sex swing.

Searching for a kink Airbnb or for kinky rentals tends to lead to the same places. The large rental platforms carry a few of them, but rarely let you filter on a spanking bench or a pillory. Here, every stay is tagged with the gear its host declares, so the filter does the searching for you.

Why most of the atlas is in France

Of the 441 stays on the map, 400 are in France. That is not an editorial preference; it is where the market is. French hosts have turned the love room, a private suite rented by the night, into a genre of its own, and a growing number have added serious furniture: crosses, benches, cages, rigging points. The regions with the most addresses are currently Grand Est, Occitanie and Provence & the Riviera.

For a traveller from North America, that makes France the most rewarding place to plan a kink-friendly trip. Paris is a direct flight away, high-speed trains put Lyon, Bordeaux or Marseille within a few hours, and a two-night stay pairs naturally with a city break. The United States, by comparison, counts 1 stay on the map so far. We list only what exists, and we would rather tell you so than pad the page.

Booking without awkward emails

Every stay page says where its booking button leads: the host's own website, or a partner platform such as Booking.com or Airbnb. Nothing is booked on Kinkstay, and your payment never passes through us. When a host has chosen to receive questions, you can write to them from the page; otherwise, the booking site is the place to ask.

Three questions are worth asking before a first stay: what exactly is installed and in which room, what the house rules say about toys, wax or marks on the furniture, and how check-in works. The hosts who run these rooms hear them every week, and none of them will blush.

Beyond France

Poland has the second-largest collection, a confident scene of BDSM apartments spread between Warsaw, Łódź, Kraków and the Baltic coast.
